2019 Citizen Police Academy

The Northampton Police Department typically offers the Citizen Police Academy (CPA) each winter.  The last class concluded on March 28, 2019.  We'll update this site and post on social media when our next CPA is scheduled for 2020.  This 8-week program is held one night per week from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m.  The academy is held in the community room of the police station located at 29 Center Street, Northampton. Participants learn about a wide range of topics including:

  • Patrol Procedures
  • Narcotics Investigations
  • Forensic Evidence
  • Domestic Violence
  • Motor Vehicle Law and Radar
  • Operating Under the Influence of Alcohol
  • Traffic Stops
  • Juvenile Issues
  • Death Investigation
  • Detective Bureau
  • Crime Scene Processing
  • sUAS (Drones)

At the conclusion of the program graduates will have the opportunity to ride with a Police Officer and to experience policing from an officer’s perspective.  Participation in the Ride-along program is not required but is available to those who are interested.

This is a great opportunity for anyone who is interested in learning more about the realities of policing.  Background checks will be conducted on applicants and they may be rejected from the program based on substantial findings in their criminal histories.  This program is free of charge.  There are a limited number of seats available, so anyone interested in participating in the next CPA should submit their application as soon as possible.
