When police officers are first hired they attend a 20+ week full-time police academy that covers a wide variety of topics.

Academy curriculum is developed and overseen by the Municipal Police Training Committee.  Once officers graduate from the academy they begin a 14-week Field Training and Evaluation (FTEP) program.  During the FTEP rookie officers ride with Field Training Officers and recieve on the job training.  Once officers begin working on their own, each year they are required to complete a minimum amount of annual training in specific categories such as First Responder/CPR, firearms, legal updates, and defensive tactics.  Laws, criminal procedures, equipment, and best practices are constantly changing.  In order to be on the cutting edge of police service, we know that we must continue to support our veteran officers as they seek to attend new courses and obtain certifications.  We are proud of the fact that our officers receive so much training each year to enhance their knowledge and strengthen their skills, as it illustrates our committment to our employees and to the citizens who we serve.

We have 65 full-time, sworn police officers within NPD.  In order to calculate the average number of hours per officer, we divided the total number of hours by 65, not including the training associated with the police academy or the Field Training and Evaluation program.  In reality, the average number of training hours per officer each year is higher, as we are rarely fully staffed and some of those 65 officers are attending the academy or are in the FTEP.  We used 65 to reflect each police officer position and did not want to over represent training averages.
