In 2015 Officer Joshua Wallace was selected as the Northampton Police Department's full-time School Resource Officer. He was primarily assigned to Northampton High School and John F. Kennedy Middle School but provided services to other schools in the community as well. His regular work hours were Monday through Friday from 7:00 am to 3:00 pm. He has specialized training in working in schools, crisis intervention, and responding to calls that involve people who have mental health issues. In 2020, the City Council voted to cut NPD's budget by 10%. The majority of this cut was taken directly from the funding for police salaries. As a result, officers were laid off and five police positions were left vacant. Officer Wallace had to be re-assigned from the schools to the patrol force.
